Interstellar 2
First we started by talking about our favourite movies. Here are a certain number of observations we made :
- characters are important : they are our door into the movie / book.
- Tragedy is one of two major, essential styles of fiction, the other being Comedy, as defined by Aristotle. The book on Comedy has been lost (The Name of the Rose, U. Eco). Tragedy = catharsis, fear & pity.
- Opposition / dichotomy between being futuristic and being realistic. Realism in science-fiction (the tablet in 2001, A Space Odyssey, the setting in Alien, etc.)
- The plot in a movie or in a book is more than interesting, it is essential.
BLAND WORDS :
Try and use a thesaurus to find better, more refined words.
Eg: important : paramount, far-reaching, etc.

Watching Interstellar, the opening credit
The very first images of the movie are the logos of the studios (WB, Paramount). They describe studios and open skies, but they have a yellowish, dirty tint to them. We can also see the logo of C. Nolan's company, Syncopy, written in a complex shape : it's a labyrinth, a maze, a daedalus. It may give us a hint about the philosophy behind the movie, and behind Nolan's career. Then we can see the shelf (l'étagère) of a library covered in dust, with a rocket toy on it.
The first character we can see has a daughter, and she says she believes in ghosts.
It takes place in what seems to be a farm, there used to be wheat, but now because of a blister, there's just dirt. There is a sort of storm of dust, it's constant.
the dad was a pilot and he crashed. The grandfather is there.
