 Test prep

Friday's test will first be about choosing 3 documents: one literary text (we already know them), one illustration (ibid) and one newspaper article (we'll discover 5 of them on Friday).

Then, we'll have to connect them, to try and find common points and differences between them. Something that helps : QUESTIONS & OPPOSITIONS.

- These two documents are not very interesting.

- > Are these two documents really not very interesting ?

- The ark could be like Noah's ark, not everyone could go away from earth.

- > Is the ark like Noah's Ark ? Could everyone go away from earth ? / Is the Ark connected with a more ancient tradition / history / myth ? Are the documents optimistic about the future of humanity ? 

Try and create a question that connects "It's just a silly dream" and Karen Thole illustration :

1. Both characters sleep. Is sleep important in these documents?

2.  The two visions are unreal. What makes the visions unreal?

3. What are the dreams of the protagonists ? Is it possible for a text to dream ?

4.  Is somewhere far away really better ?

5. Is this illustration the strange place Jeff has been dreaming about ?

6. Is life a nightmare (Vida es sueño, Calderno)?

7. Is it possible to know about the documents ?

8. Is there anything positive to be said about the documents ?

9. Are these documents connected ?

10. Is it possible to map the visions of these characters ?

Of Mice and Men correction

  Groupwork 1. Write a presentation for all characters, including quotes (especially when first introduced).   Advice = try and focus on words, the way characters are introduced. What they are described doing, saying, thinking. (eg, with Candy). 2. Write about the importance of nature, how it is represented, and when in the book. Use quotes.   Nature is described in great detail, especially at the beginning of every section. Nature vs Culture ?    3. Using both the novel and the course, try and highlight the different themes explored in the novel. Possible other themes... a. Cycles, breaking predestination (Nature, Lennie keeps doing the same thing over and over, etc.) b. Is friendship possible ? a conflicting brotherhood ; inescapable oppositions ; everyone is lonely in the end ; clashing dreams (Lennie's dream of a ranch, George's dream of being on his own). c. Illustrations  Today we took a look at several pictures we'll use for the tests. H.R. Giger,  Atomic Children,  1968 :   In this black & white sketch, science-fiction is merged with horror a nd eroticism in what Giger called a "biomechanical" fantasy. It looks like a nightmarish vision from a feverish dream. Giger was the designer of the Alien creature from the movies. An ombilical cord links the bottom of a hypersexualised alien to a strange looking moon. Surrealism, contrast, at night? John Harris,  Building the Ark , 2017 :   In the background, big open skies and fluffy clouds characterize this painting. Gliders and spaceships circle around a tower and a space station. The title hints at ( evokes ) a biblical connection : the Ark links men and God.
